Washington State Window Tint Laws
In Washington State, most car windows, including the rear window and all side windows, cannot be tinted darker than 24% VLT (Visible Light Transmission), allowing at least 24% of light to pass through. The windshield is permitted to have non-reflective tint in the top six inches, and drivers with medically necessary conditions can apply for a tint exemption with a physician’s certificate. For Multi-Purpose Vehicles (MPVs), a greater degree of privacy is allowed on the rear and back side windows.
Front Side Windows:
Must allow more than 24% of light through (24% VLT or clearer).
Rear Window:
Must allow more than 24% of light through (24% VLT or clearer).
Windshield:
Non-reflective tint is allowed on the top six inches only.
For Multi-Purpose Vehicles (MPVs):
Front Side Windows:
Must be no darker than 24% VLT.
Rear Window:
Any darkness is allowed for greater privacy.
